LITERACY MODEL

Join other Pre-Kindergarten through third grade literacy educators in Region 7 for a professional development experience connected to the classroom.

The culmination of this professional learning opportunity will result in a micro-credential in literacy instruction. All teachers who complete the requirements of the Region 7 Literacy Model have demonstrated not only the knowledge of, but also the implementation of, the seven components of research-based literacy instruction.

In order to have a balanced literacy framework, research has identified the need for 7 critical structures.

What Are The 7 Structures?

This model below will provide research-based support, aligned to the TEKS and Pre-K Guidelines, for developing high-quality literacy instruction that is designed to meet the needs of all students.

LARGE GROUP / WHOLE GROUP This instructional arrangement includes more than six students. The instruction is based on grade level standards with appropriate scaffolding and support. This includes mini-lessons, direct instruction, and modeling.

SMALL GROUP This instructional arrangement includes six or fewer students. The instruction is learner-centered with the teacher providing direct, explicit instruction or activities for student practice in a targeted standard-based skill that reflects student needs, modality, and/or interest.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING This instructional arrangement is designed for individual student application of learned standards-based skills and strategies. The teacher is monitoring individual student progress and conferring with students.
